Thread rolling machines are among the most heavily used machines in any plant, and the more you use one the better you need to know it — so that a problem can be traced quickly and production is not held up. When a machine that normally runs well suddenly stops producing threads, it is almost always one of three causes.
1. Die direction reversed. If the rolling head on the spindle is fitted the wrong way round, the dies run in reverse and no thread is formed.
2. Locating sleeve orientation wrong. An incorrectly oriented locating sleeve affects how the blank is positioned, which in turn affects thread formation.
3. Worn consumable parts. After long service, consumable components such as the rolling dies and the locating sleeve wear and lose their ability to form a clean thread. Replace them as a set and keep spares on hand.
