Cold rolling of small-module involute splines uses two identical involute rolling dies, L and R, mounted on the two spindles of the machine and driven synchronously in the same direction. The R die is fed radially by a hydraulic cylinder; the L die is adjusted so that its impression coincides with the mark left on the workpiece P.
The workpiece is located and clamped on its two centre holes. The fixture allows axial movement and lets the part swing through a small angle about an axis through point O parallel to the spindle, so that during rolling the workpiece stays in free rolling contact with both dies and is easy to load.
Die dimensions, geometric tolerances and technical requirements follow those of thread rolling dies and cylindrical measuring gears. The common normal length or span measurement M is calculated from standard spline data, and Cr12MoV (59–62 HRC) is a typical die material.
